McCann fined £25m by government body

October 30, 2019

The Competition and Markets Authority last week announced that it has fined F P McCann in excess of £25m for its involvement in a price-fixing cartel which rigged the market and overcharged its customers over a seven-year period.  More information is available on the government’s website.

A Director of one of the other firms involved has received a two-year suspended jail sentence.  This latest setback for McCann comes shortly after it was fined £150K by the HSE following the death of a lorry driver.  We do not want to welcome this company into the heart of our community

Opponents of McCann’s plans to devastate the farmland around Littleport have long argued that this company has not been honest in its dealings with the council’s planning authorities.  This further evidence of dishonest activity over a sustained period merely reinforces that view.

Nothing F P McCann says can be taken at face value.  We have had to dismantle their false claims one by one.  Councillors cannot let this company destroy our environment.  We will fight to the end and we need the help of everybody in this area who has a sense of decency and a concern for our environment.

It is likely that this development will affect McCann’s business going forward as councils and other public bodies will have to think twice before awarding contracts to a company and Directors with this on their record.  In planning jargon, this casts severe doubts on the “sustainability” and “viability” of the planning application and the council should take note.
